Only in bearing the burden of our failures can we find the strength to go on. Only in detachment from glory, or honour, or jealousy... from life itself can we hope to spare others from grief.
We are Doom Eagles. And we are dead already.Perkunoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15014274094282168711noreply@blogger.comBlogger1475125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20706901.post-47081776571953050792024-03-15T23:59:00.072+00:002024-03-15T23:59:00.142+00:0011/52 Friday Update - Books Read; Currently Reading & TBR (and bought)<p>M <span style="font-family: verdana;">arch came... and while the first week was bad, the second was way better and I finished 4 novels. I don't want to be reading any of those after March which will be Warhammarch? </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>A</b></span><b><span style="font-family: verdana;">lready Finish</span></b></p><ol><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Defiant - Brandon Sanderson 505p - 1/2/2024 - 92</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">⭐</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Apocalypse - Brian Bowyer 407p - 6/2/2024 - 55</span>⭐</li><li style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">The Ice Oprhan<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Kathleen O'Neal Gear<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>294p - 7/2/2024 - 48</span>⭐</li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">The Flood (Blackwater #1) - Michael McDowell 189p - 9/2/2024 - 72</span>⭐</li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Malorie<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Josh Malerman 299p - 10/2/2024 - 33</span>⭐</li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Son of the Slob - Aron Beauregard (audiobook) 218p - 23/2/2024</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> - 79</span>⭐</li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Shadow of Ullanor - Rob Sanders 204 - 23/02/2024 </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">- 88</span>⭐</li></ol><p></p><p><b><span style="font-family: verdana;">Ongoing</span></b></p><p></p><div><ol><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">The Great Hunt - Robert Jordan 468/705pp (66%)</span></li><li><span style="font-family: verdana;">Swan Song<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Robert McCammon<span style="white-space: pre;"> 351/</span>956 (37%)</span></li><li style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Blenders Babies<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Jon Athan 163/362 (45%)</span></li><li style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Cthulhu Reloaded (H. <span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58886207">The Ice Ghost</a> by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/47407">Kathleen O'Neal Gear</a><br />
My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5793227413">48 of 100 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">
<div>Pages : 288p</div><div>Year : 2022</div><div>Genre : Post Apocalyptic</div><div>Series : Rewilding Reports, #2/3</div><br />
</span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">I am going to rate this 48 out of 100.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">First of all, it drags a lot on the treking in the caves and not that much development. IT suffers from being the middle book.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So, this story follows the previous novel , but several moons (months) have passed. The peace between SeaLion & Rust are gone and Rust has almost destroyed Sealion. Of 100 something there are now only 20. After a brief parley Torgon (of Rust) asks for Quiller to guide him to Lynx and in return they won't kill the remaining Sealions. She a accepts and their journey starts. Meanwhile we've got glimpses of Lynx living with the supposedly last Jermen alive but slowing dying (don't know why since he is still around 1000 years in the future).</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">I am not going to spoil everything but after meeting they then travel again to a caves where a old woman (another Jermen) lives. Stuff happen and the book end.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">First of all, my main problem and to me it was too much was the pov. There are three pov now instead of two. We've got now Rabbitear and each chapter is around 3 to 5 pages. Each one is 1st person perspective and so at some point it just blends and got me confuse a lot... who am I reading now? This was disconcerting.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Then the plot is just as I've said middle book. You've got a couple semi answers and more questions let's hope book 3 wraps it up. I am going to read this month. It was to be one per month but to be honest I Want this to be over. We understand now a bit.. Scientists developed something that give birth to something that lives in the water and a ice age appear. (what are the giants that they talk about?) . Scientists (don't know why Jermen comes from that) battle and some development creatures that can adapt to cold. Basically Denisovans and neatherdals (the two branches before our current evolutionary state). Basically they are redoing the past and in x thousand years they will again change to current homo sapiens (who the heck know that would happen). This idea is basically focus on the theory that evolution is scripted go to a-b-c and so on.. but is it? That's why we've you've got all of this branches... Well let's see how Kathleen grabs us on book 3.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Overall, I didn't enjoy as much this.</span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />

<div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Pages : 409</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Year : 2020</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Genre : Apocalyptic, Horror</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Series : Solo</span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />
</span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">I am going to rate 55 out of 100 due to the finale.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">In this we follow several groups\characters that meet up for a finale that the backover hints. You've got Miranda & Will a young couple of 16 years old, You've got Amber of 12, Verna 42, Joseph, and Gwyneth and her father. All of the stories will lead to the finale that the book cover talks but for that to happen we need to go through 350 pages. The book ha 410. So it was a bit odd. So what's this tale about you may ask, and it's about death. It's about a apocalypse where people who have their phone on their arms (a new think of the future) starts dying or becoming assassins - hearing voices and such.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So far so good? Yes.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">The characters are non-likable at most , distasteful, awful bunch at the least. All have some major psychological problems and they are already either killers, cannibals or truly crazy ones. Apart from 2 characters I think they are all crazy and hard to root - and one of them dies. I am not going to spoil much but one of the most wicked is Amber a 12 year old that has been killing animals since she was a child, raped since she was 7 and killer well since she was 11 I think. She enjoys sex and drinks more than your average drunkard. Too be honest that's a constant of all of this characters, there is not one that is not a drunk.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So, as you can see this book is not to root for your characters. This book is for the spatterpunk fanatics who want something evil. IF you have enjoyed Tim Curran you will feel right at home. This reminds me alot of The Devil Next Door from him BUT far off.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So, as I've said 350 pages is their stories, how they end up meeting, the backstory of some characters, their depravity acts and such. Sex exists but is not graphic. Rape as well, not even the killing.. Yes there are some heads cut, some children killed but all said rarely showed.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So why my rating you may ask? The Ending is crappy.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So, I am going to have to spoil a bit so be warned (I will not dwell much afterwards)</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">- Well as I've said the vast majority of the tale is seeing the evil that man do (Iron Maiden reference) and how deprave we are. Some due to external factors, some born that way. When they go the same place they find some stairs and some monsters that start killing them off one by one until two are left alive and they just leave... So, I was thinking, well so much killers together you've got a battle royale but no. It's just monsters, some characters are just killed off screen, characters that we've been following since the start and it's just boring, badly done. I can't forgive and it feels lazy. YEs the characters shouldn't all die in a blaze of glory but killing 50% of them -" and that happen" it's just bad...</span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />

My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6208918666">92 of 100 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">
<div>Pages : 544</div><div>Year : 2018</div><div>Genre : YA Sci-Fi</div><div>Series : Skyward #1/4</div></span><br /><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">This book was my second foray into Brandon Sanderson stuff. The first was Emperor's Soul and it was awesome read. Now I tried this and after reading the first story I am going to read the all series. It's my second YA this year after Kathleen O'Neal One.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">This tale we follow Spensa (Spin) as she is going through the pilot's school to be a fighter like her father who was labelled as a coward for fleeing a battle. So basically is a YA novel , hints of dystopia and sci-fi and the revelation in the end made me really interested to read more of it.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">In terms of plot, it's simple one. Spin must overcome her difficulties being a pilot like her father whilst most people look down on her due to her father coward behaviour. We are talking about a nation, cities, that are highly militaristic - due to continuous attack of alien species called the Krell. They attack quite frequently and so society must produced teenagers to fight those battles. Usually the Krell don't use that many ships and Defiant (the place) usually defeats them. Of course, since the start you get the feeling something is not right... why the krell fill only 100 ships at most. Why do they target the best pilots first. Why do they not destroy the cities from above the sky since they have weapons more powerful than atomic bombs. All of these questions will be answered, or at least partially on this book.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">One of the most interesting happens is also the M-Bot ship that appears and it's IA and takes Spin under it's wing. Their conversation are quite funny and although it can't really be human it sure tries, or else it will write a new routine for that purpose. It's the comic relief of the story, although Spin is also. If this was not Brandon Sanderson, probably it would be overused...</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">There are interesting characters like Jurgen, Ironside, Cobb, MF, the Sniper among others... He really tries to give them personality to all of them and they really feel like full grown characters as the story progress. After 500 pages he really flesh them out. They grow, they change, it's very good.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">For all woke people out there, although there is a gal as a MC, Jurgen a first citizen - a noble - is black, ironsides which is high marshal is also black. But that's the interesting part, although we know the colour of their skin it really doesn't matter. He doesn't use the race or sex of a character to make part of the plot or character development. It's a good breath of fresh air.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Overall is a good first novel and start of series. Looking forward to read the next three. </span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />

My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5699799784">33 of 100</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><div>Pages : 299</div><div>Year : 2020</div><div>Genre : Apocalyptic Fiction</div><div>Series : Bird Box (Finish)</div></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /><br />
It took me 2 days to read the novel, that's something. I've watch Birdie Box when it was released and then I've watch the other movie set in Barcelona. When I saw both books at sale I bought them. First I Want to learn more about the setting and I thought it brought something new. The second novel, this one was not Barcelona but a sequel of the first one which intrigue me. I thought the story was told...<br /><br />I started and almost immediately I didn't enjoy it. So they were in a safe haven (somewhat) and chaos erupts and most are killed. Both Malorie and her two children escape and settle in another place. Time jump several years and now they are both 16. So knowing that she was a mother at teenager I bet she is around 30's.<br /><br />Most of their life , and most of their book is about Malorie shielding the boy and girl (Tom & Olympia). After an encounter with someone who is making a census they learn that Malorie's parents may be alive so they travel to that place either on foot or by a newly built train. <br /><br />Most of these book is bad to be honest, unless you forget about the first one and the apocalpytic world they are living. This book is quick guide on how not be a over protecting parent, realizing they will not be always x years and that with time if you control them too much the chains will be broken. Most of the novel is Malorie telling them not remove the blindfolds whilst Tom trying to escape her grip. Olympia just exists , sometimes siding with one or the other.<br /><br />Now for the spoilers part... So, as you know there are these beings that make people crazy and committing crimes and then suicide , right? On Barcelona they delve more and making people that have seen this monsters to be completly ravening crazy but not to the point of suicide. Here we've got something else.. It seems you can look at them and not being crazy at all, even more revealing in the last 10 pages or so, Olympia (didn't really understand about Tom) could and see these monsters without any drawbacks whatsoever. So why did she let the monsters killed all the people on first haven and then on the following 10 years , why didn't she told anything? I know she is over protecting and such BUT... <br /><br />End of spoilers<br /><br />So , as a post apocalyptic novel I would rate this bad. On a book that enhances my experience with Bird Box I would rate this bad. IF you just want a story focus on characters that are focus on being over protective to the limit due to her own fears then probably this is a book for you - but I am kidding. It's not that interesting. 33/100

<span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/769750">Ship of Fools</a> by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/13992">Richard Paul Russo</a><br />
My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5997100426">93 of 100 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">
<div>Pages : 384</div><div>Year : 2001</div><div>Genre : Sci-Fi, Space Opera, Horror</div><div>Series : Solo</div><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;">This book is flag as Sci-Fi Horror. After finishing the novel I think the Tags my mislead you thinking this is a Alien-alike book but it's not. The Horror here is not visceral or monsters that will make you fear the night. No. The Horror is more psychological that anything else. There are a couple of situations that you feel horrible situation but not horror per se.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;">In this tale we follow Bartolomeu which follows the captain of a generation ship, giving him hints, advices and such. Bartolomeu is not a well like person, first because he has some handicapped problems (to be honest, they are mention from time to time but I didn't see anything that really made me think, well that's because he is handicapped or something like that. No it's handicapped but in the end is more "capped" that "regular" people. It was a bit strange and a missed opportunity. We also have other interesting characters like the Bishop , the Captain, Par - the dwarf and Father Veronica. Yes a woman, not trans or something like. They just call the clergy woman as Father (don't know if it's normal in protestant religion but I will check later).</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;">So, this tale , we follow a generation ship that has been traveling through space for hundreds of years, so much that nobody knows how long. There was a revolution two hundreds years before and much history was destroyed. In this "day" of age, the ship is divided in the higher deck and lower decks. The lower decks work on maintaining the ship while the higher are just "nobles" and lead the ship and important stuff. We also have a religion, Christian religion and the Bishop and the Captain are always frightening to get the higher hand. To be honest the first 150 pages is basically politics and getting to know the characters and don't get me wrong, probably my favourite part. The second part of the tale is their investigation of a strange ship that appear form nowhere. And here lays some of the horror stuff they talk about it and there is BUT not that much. Some are just hinted...</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;">So what's good about this? Well, in terms of characters I really love it. I love reading about our main protagonist and his ways within the echelons that hate him and his interest on the lower decks and also his love for Father Veronica. The investigations on the ship is also interesting and the last 50/60 pages just fly by. To be honest I was a bit sad about one character but alas, not going to tell you about it.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;">What's also good? Well the philosophy and theologian debates that we have between almost all characters... One of the best is chapter 40 where Father Veronica & Bartolomeo talk about god and the debate of free will and\or maybe not. One of the most interesting was the Christ Crucification explanation where Father explains the "official" view and her view - god's own guilt.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><i style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;">"He create us. He gave us Free Will. Therefore He is in some real way ultimately responsible for the suffering we inflict upon one another. He Has His own Guilt. And sacrificing His Son, Himself, was a way to help expiate that guilt."</i><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-size: 14px;">So that's it.. It's an interesting tale about discover, about theology where the main character is atheist and in love with the most pious of women. It's much more. If you enjoy books that deal with Generation Ships then this book is for you. You love books that deal with discover of a truly alien species and not humans in other shapes then this book is for you.</span><br /><br />

<span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39296212">Thunderhead</a> by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/19564">Neal Shusterman</a><br />
My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5057396844">4 of 5 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">
<div>Pages : 515</div><div>Year : 2018</div><div>Genre : Dystopia , YA</div><div>Series : Arc of Scythe 2/3</div><br />
</span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Thunderhead follows the previous, couple of months later (almost a year). Here we follow Anastasia the vast majority of the time (almost always accompanied with Granddame Curie, also a bit of Rowan as he is killing scythes that are a shame for the ideals they (old guard) represent. If anyone likes gleaming, is discriminatory etc - will get gleam by Scythe Lucifer. We also follow a bit of Faraday (which at the time is hidden and looking for the Land of Nod) and he is being helped by a Scythe wannabe / librarian Munira (although these instances are far in-between the great scheme and finally we have a new character, Greyson Tolliver who is enamoured with thunderhead even wanting to work for her but following what he thought it was her advise he breaks one of the vows of contacting the Scythes and his expelled.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">But the main character and probably the most interesting , flesh out one is not those above. OH no, she is every chapter (and there are more than 40) and we get to see, finally, what is the ThunderHead. This tale we get to know her more and more and even more, we see her change as the story progress. It was an amazing feet to make it happen and I really love it. She (is a it maybe?) a lot throughout the book , although a lot of it was a bit predictable. Read and understand why.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">The ending was very good and I can't understand the feeling of people waiting a year for the end. Thank the lords I Am late to the party. Not in February but in March I am going to read it. 83/100.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">If you enjoy the first you are going to enjoy the second - although and there is a caveat, the last two were highly focus on those two teens and their pseudo-love story. Here both characters are there but the most important thing is ThunderHead and the going forward with all the plotlines... If you were invested on those two characters, well I Don't' know book 3 but I expect some closure there. The main story, again is the politics within the scythes. Old Guards vs Goddard and the correct way of gleaming, the all scythes society vs thunderhead and finally the city and procedures. Again, highly focus on advancing the plotlines, less on characters </span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />

<span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/117842">Songs of Distant Earth</a> by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7779">Arthur C. Clarke</a><br />
My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/254771413">71 of 100 stars</a></span><div>
<div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Pages : 256</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Year : 1986</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Genre : Sci-Fi</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Series : Solo</span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />
</span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Giving 71 and recommending? Well, yes. First of all, have in mind that this book was written and re-written but it's old. The premises come from the golden age of Science Fiction and it's one of the most memorable being written at that time. IT was then re-written in the 80's. Don't know what was changed but I believe the premises stay the same.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">This book deals with space exploration, colonization of a new world. Being a 230 page novel it has a lot of ideas from the ones I mentioned before to interaction between two different branches of humanity (imagine shogun stuff when Europeans saw for the first time Japanese people. They were for all purposes aliens). this book also deals with the end of the earth (due to neutrino problem that was solved a couple of years after Arthur C Clarke died). There is a reason why this is his most beloved novel.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So why the 71 rating? Although it deals with a lot of interesting topics (I forgot xenobiology , encounters with other species, terraforming, spaceships stuff) it never really dwell much on each individual topic. IT's like he crammed all of this interesting topics , probably being the top runner in several, but never really solving\delving to much on them. So, you may find interesting stuff on terraforming, psychology, sociology etc it never really provides anything too deeply and so was a bit boring...</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So, I didn't talk about what's the book about right?</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So basically earth is doomed and they know it's being destroyed around 3500 (or so). So humanity started exploring other planets with different methods (again we don't really know much about them) but the vast majority just lost contact. In a last stretch finally we discovered something that allow to send people (hibernating) instead of embryos. Hop we go to another planet but had to stop in a previous colonized world to get more ice. One of the things that most annoyed me was the lack of info on this... how did humans who stayed behind felt about being left on a doom planet? Did they revolt? I mean as the time progress I Would think there would be wars and revolt since everyone would want to go and not being on sinking ship...</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">So as I said, this ship arrived and encounter the inhabitants living in paradise with no knowledge of war, gods and so on. While I would think it would be interesting of more clashes between two different societies it was cool to see. But again very very superficial... This book could have been 500 pages. The end was interesting since it deals with idea of staying on that planet or leaving to their destination... there were dissidents but again too superficial.. Alas... great premise but lack of depth. (</span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />

I will make the next update on the following Friday. My goal was to read 100 pages per day and althought it seems completed books I've read "only" 2866, counting the four ongoing novels I've read around 3200. My goal to February is the same as January. More than 100 pages per day.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">As you are aware I modified the rating so it it's more easy to understand my favourite novels and to make lists. So this month favourite book was Ship of Fools by Richard Paul Russo whilst Hunt for Red October was close second. I read 4 (currently reading the fifth) of 9 books on my reading goal. Not that bad. BTW, Although I didn't mention I Started reading the departure and after 80 pages gave up. I bought 44 novels which is atrocious. One day I will burn..</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">This next month I am going to receive those novels I me<br />ntion below (but they are bundles so cheaper) and I am going to Ireland so I will definitely buy a couple of more.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHGnnkB7PN4EiVxpDrs-gmaudTEsAPtjsEPQ6JAH0ZEqFNNPr4kJ-stDRRWJmMuY3cGObc2EG8J4dye0yjKeSDzL32AWMS_oZYwfS5gEgMGZSTtJGX9mWN-w5ExWmBKbGLQu5bU_rYm3eVX9cl2IAf-72EcjZZPhwmdTRWMEznOSLsTuWqkndmuQ/s4000/IMG_20240124_175609.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHGnnkB7PN4EiVxpDrs-gmaudTEsAPtjsEPQ6JAH0ZEqFNNPr4kJ-stDRRWJmMuY3cGObc2EG8J4dye0yjKeSDzL32AWMS_oZYwfS5gEgMGZSTtJGX9mWN-w5ExWmBKbGLQu5bU_rYm3eVX9cl2IAf-72EcjZZPhwmdTRWMEznOSLsTuWqkndmuQ/w640-h480/IMG_20240124_175609.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">current TBR - no I am not kidding. <span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1262932">Childhood's End</a> by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7779">Arthur C. Clarke</a><br />
My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/254770878">69 of 100 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">
<div>Pages : 256 </div><div>Year : 1986</div><div>Genre : Sci-Fi , Post Apocalpytic Fiction</div><div>Series : solo</div><br />
Let's go...<br />Arthur C Clarke was a man of ideas and a visionary in the golden age of sci-fi. As you read his books, if you have read, watch and more modern stuff it's almost impossible to not say, well this is outdated. I've seen this and so on. BUT, per example this book was written in 1953. That's 70 years ago. Of course nowadays, someone copied, used and so on.. But the idea comes from him.<br /><br />This book was interesting and I was getting vibes of "V", you know ? but it went another way. You've got this aliens who drop one day and say to earth people, stop fighting or we will destroy you (Well they never said like this) and after seeing their power, people stop fighting. It was a bit too simple but okay. Probably if you've got a pistol point to your head all the time you will not complain much of your grievances. <br /><br />So peace was achieved and humanity finally could focus on what was important.. Is it good, right? Right? (insert meme of Padme and Anakin)<br /><br />The vast majority of the novel, the author didn't really try to focus much on that, showing us good things, some mystery on the overlords and by the end a bit on their planet, their intentions and so on...<br /><br />I think the author went on a simple path and in one phrase he convey that without adversaties humanity cannot evolve and that's true. Humanity in times of war and strife evolve and then use that stuff for the common man. Please research all the things that were discovered during WW2 or even due to it. Even ideas come out of war, the idea of freedom, equality rose when (in the USA)? when they were at war in the Vietnam. Without it , probably things would not evolve as they did. I believe that difficult, strife and war makes us humans (and at the same time makes us un-human).<br /><br />The author, either does not believe or try not to talk about it. He wanted to tell a tale about a race of beings being our overlords/guardians... to talk more I will have to into the spoiler section... 7/10<br /> In terms of characters is bland, the only reason to read it would be story itself.<br /><br />A bit on the spoilers , <a class="jsShowSpoiler spoilerAction">(view spoiler)</a><span class="spoilerContainer" style="display: none;">[ so, by the end we start to realize the purpose of these beings.. first of all, they very alike demons - that's the reason we have in our mythologies this beings as evil. But the reason they are "evil" it's not because they are our overlords, or trying to kill us. This is linked with reason of their appearance. Basically they are like shepherds who appear on societies that are going to make a evolution transition - basically humankind is evolving from normal human beings to beings that have the means to connect with an overmind (via telepathy and such) So this beings are just there to ensure we don't kill ourselves. After we made our transition they will leave the planet, human beings as we know (homo-sapiens) will die out and our sons\daughters will evolve, transcendence to another state we don't really understand... what happened to those kids we never really understood... Humanity has disappear, even our planet basically cease to exist... And that's why we have demons on our books... They were a warning with their appearance, we would die as a species.. neat, no? I believe the author try to explain as racial memory- It's like we have an instinct fear of darkness or spiders. Nobody teach us. We just are. This is the same. Oh well.. <a class="jsHideSpoiler spoilerAction">(hide spoiler)</a>]</span><br /><br /> interesting concepts, interesting plot, poor characters, an ending that leave us some questions...

<span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29430536">The Last Son of Dorn</a> by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/5406240">David Guymer</a><br />
My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1773108071">8 of 10 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">
<div>Pages : 256</div><div>Year : 2016</div><div>Genre : Warhammer 40K</div><div>Series : Beast Arises 10/12</div><br />
<span id="freeTextreview1773108071" style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">The 10th book of the series and only two missing. Oh My what a ride. First of all, desclaimer, In the beginning I was not enjoying. It was convoluted story and jumping around confusingly. It seems they were capturing some Ork Psychers but it felt very confusing...</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;">There was interesting political maneuverers between the high lords and Koorland plus among the Space Marines. It was very interesting to see also the clash between space marines (although, in this novel everyone accepted Koorland as the Lord Commander of all forces).</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;">The last part of the novel is the second invasion of Ullanor since the beginning of the war and this time they have a plan. Koorland, Deathwatch Killer Teams, Sisters of Silence, Ogryn, Commissar, Assassins and a Mechanicum force battle in the main throne room to kill the Beast and what a epic battle it was...</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;">Spoilers Ahead;</span><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;">With the beast dead, the happiness is very short as they found out that this Beast is just one of 6. If billions troops, ships, hundreds or thousands of space marines died to defeat one how can they defeat more 5? Koorland is killed by the second Beast and now It despair time...</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;">The ending was depressing as it can be.. It was strange to see Laurentis a bit sad (he is part of the cult mechanicum and usually not that emotional ) Bohemond of the Black Templars weeping and all hope was lost - But now enters Thane. I bet he will be the most important character in the next books.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;">My thoughts... I think this was a nice addition to the 9 other, as previous sometimes I think this was rushed and so can be confusing. This second siege of Ullanor could have been a 416 pages altogether. I am going to give 8/10 and the vast majority of these points is for the drama within the last 50 pages</span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px;"> </span><br /><br />

<span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/415020">The Hunt for Red October</a> by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3892">Tom Clancy</a><br />
My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5785384708">9 of 10 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Pages : 1984</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Year : 464</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Genre : Spy Thriller, Military Fiction</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Series : Jack Ryan<br /><br />
It took me 4 months to read an it was amazing altogether. I should have read this in a couple of sittings but alas life is that way. Don't know why but sometimes , even If I am loving a book I start another and another...<br /><br />This book is probably one of the most know from him... it's a tale about a submarine called Red October who is quite knew to URSS navy but just on her maiden voyage it tries to defect to USA. Within are a lot of characters that you get to know, probably the better one is Ramius (captain). On the other side you got Jack Ryan a CIA operative , the head of CIA, of FBI, The president among countless other characters. Most of them probably won't appear on later books (exception being the president and top ones). It's a tale of cat and mouse and it's a very entertaining and interesting story. If you go there in a spirit of learning you get to learn a lot about the navy , about stuff that I didn't even knew it existed and you get a lot of navy, army jargon. I bet this book is a wet dream for military people. Another thing that comes to mind is that this book was written in 1984. Cold War was ongoing and so , reading this book back in the day should have been amazing. Another thing that I have to give credits is that, today if I want to write a espionage, navy book I google stuff. But in 1984 you didn't had the internet so people , to write had to go to library, have experience or books about it. Nowadays I bet most authors don't read history books to inspire and such. They go to wiki, see something cool and write it something. (I am not removing credits for authors of nowadays - I giving praise to this author who with so many detailed information must had experience/study hard).<br /><br />It's a good thriller, good military fiction focus on subs and espionage. It's political games.. I Am going to read more in the near future , no doubt.

It's not that it was a bad book, other stuff just come and I stop reading it. The Same is happening with Great Hunt. My rating: <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5793227113">68 of 100 stars</a></span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">
<div>Pages : 304</div><div>Year : 2021</div><div>Genre : Post Apocalpytic Fiction</div><div>Series : Rewilding Reports #1</div><div> </div>
</span><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">First book of 2024. As I write this novel I am happy that I finished. This is clearly YA Sci-Fi on which I will be reading another one this month and you can definitely understand why is YA. It's way to simple, the page read goes up effortlessly and I ended up reading a novel in one day if you count only hours. I also read 60 pages of Neal Asher's Departure. So, branding everything sci-fi is just idiotic. There's a reason this is YA and that's hard sci-fi. Here , although alien world, was really easy to get into. You get the meaning of some stuff as you go along and you never really feel lost. On the other hand, neal asher, if you don't understand a word (and you won't ) you feel confused and hoping for a more clear water.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">This novel has been on my mind for some mind. With only 300 pages I knew it would be fairly easy read and something to begin the year with. I've been reading several of Gear's novels (both her's and her husband) and although this is the first YA it has their characteristics. If you've read the people of the north America in a post apocalyptic wasteland of ice and cold, then you got it. This tale is told in around 50 chapters, alternate between Lynx and Quiller. Both are 16 and childhood's friends. The problem? Quiller loves Lynx and Lynx chooses another girl to marry but on the wedding night she ends up killed by some lions (ice lions?). Branded as a coward , but not wanting him to be dead or outcast they send him on a mystical quest . There he finds a Doctor Arike which he thinks it's one of the lost Jemen. On the other hand we follow Quiller as she tries to survive this new world without him but being a SIMP. Yeah I know it's usually a male but in this case it's her. Even knowing that he would never choose her, she goes at great lengths to protect him like a mother protects his son. Some dialogues, and actions are pretty YA that makes my black hearth cry thinking that writers a) think people behave like this or b) they are right and people do act like this. Don't know which is more depressing...</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Courage isn't the province of the brave Lynx. It's the virtue of the terrified. IT's what happens when you have no option left.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">One of the most inters testing aspects is the worldbuilding. There are some interesting stuff here like who are these pseudo-indians (we already know who they , after all in the end they provide some spoilers) and what happened to the world. What is Zyme? What are the Ice Giants etc. There are so much to be found and I want to do it. I will read it. But my enthusiasm dwindle a little to be honest. The market is not me. The market is a 12/16 year olds.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Oh and before I forget, although it's a frozen landscape, rarely they talk about it and how it affects them. It sure as everyone living through it like it's a winter in Portugal. It bothers a little but very bearable. Another thing that upsets me was where the action took place. My god, they travel miles or days yet they always find someone they are looking at. For a frozen landscape with a thousand survivors they sure are all in the same 10 feet.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;">Another thing that upset me was the length.. This could easily be a duology of two 400 pages book. it ended awkwardly and the justification like they did for another novel "people nowadays want smaller books". Who said it? Probably the publishers and writers since they will sell more. People don't want to pay thrice for a book that could be one or two. I will give this book a 7 out of 10.</span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />
