October Horror Fest - 13/31 Anime Review: Higurashi: When They Cry

Higurashi is one of those animes, probably the only one, you can really think it's Horror. There aren't many (that are good). If you go to MyAnimeList you will find titles like
Monster (8.73) ; Yakusoku no Neverland (8.65); Berserk (8.48); Perfect Blue (8,45), Hellsing Ultimate (8.42) & Kiseijjuu (8,42).

To be honest there are others bellow and even these above that I wouldn't consider Horror. Neverland it's a thriller with some horror elements, Berserk it's the pure grimdark fantasy. Hellsing has some horror elemnts but it's more vampire story with flashes of Terror. Then besides this ones you've got Shinsekai Yori wish I didn't enjoy and the horror it's very limited to be honest. It's more apocalyptic fantasy tropes than horror. Maybe the last 5 or 6 episodes have some elements of horror but nothing too strong.

They also put Akira, Dorohedoro which are not horror at all. They have some graphic image of monsters or such but not horror. Jigoku Shoujo it's more horror than any of the above and it's rating it's below 8.

Higurashi sits with a 7.97 rating.
So what's Higurashi? Higurashi it's a story about a boy who goes to a village Hinamizawa and meets several people there. Each episode is set in "arcs" and each arcs it's a different approach of what happens in the village and it's inhabitants.

In each episode one of them goes crazy and kills the rest or some of the other people. It's very interesting to be real, although some arcs are not as good as others.

There are two seasons and now a third season it's being aired as we speak. We later understand that this is not a retelling of the events (like an anthology kind of events) but in reality after each arc the world resets and the only one that knows it all it's Rika a young teen of 10 or 11 years old that in the reality has 110 years old. as the series progress the remaining characters also start to have glimpses of their past lives if you will.

This is a good Horror show. The first I can honestly say it's horror although if we are going to preciosisms  this is Psychological Gore Horror.

In terms of rating I would give 8 stars to the first season and 6 to the second.

I would advise to anyone who wants to dwell on Anime Horror - which to me it's very poor. Maybe it's hard to make horror in anime? I don't know. Since part of the anime (2/3) come from Manga or even Light Novel maybe it's hard to make good horror manga? I don't know...
