Review: Nightfall - James Swallow (Stargate Atlantis)

Title Nightfall
Author James Swallow
Year 2008
Stand Alone or Series Stargate Atlantis 8
Pages 304
Reading Time 7 to 22 November 2012

Another un-interesting novel of stargate atlantis. After leaving a void when the show was cancelled I had to read the books belonging to this series. Unfortunately they are not that good because the main characters don't behave equally in each novel. If one portrays wrongly Mckay others leave Teyla and Ronon as simple sidekicks of Sheppard. Even their relationships are kind of wrong. Sheppard loves, in his own way, Mckay but some books its seems he hates him.

This novel depicts the SGA in a world that is free of wraiths for some time but at the same time that benevolent dictator kidnaps people at random and after some time released them with some illness. Most of the first half of the novel it's like the prime directive of startrek that says that they should avoid messing with an environment they visit. Strangely in the episodes rarely this comes up. Well after Teyla and Ronon become held captive the rest of the team ignores the directive and move forward to help them. The revelation was great and easily the only good part of the novel.

There was several typos on this novel mainly with the Ronon name.

Unfortunately the void remains and even not enjoying almost any novel I shall read the next one... with low expectations.... 5.5 out 10

Review: Malediction by CZ Dunn

Title  Malediction

Author CZ Dunn

Year 2012
Pages Around 36 pages = 80m
Reading Time October 2012

As you all know, I don't enjoy BL audiobooks but... This was probably the best audiobook I listened. Unlike most of audiobooks that I could easily read the story and probably enjoyed more this one I must say, to my regret, that probably wouldn't happen. why?

Because there was something in those actors that made me close my eyes and imagine the all thing.

This isn't a Dark Angel audiobook. In my opinion is an imperial guard audiobook with a participation of the dark angels. Why?

This tale happens in two storylines. First, the present, is when Regan Antigone, an retired officer of the Imperial Guard is receiving adulation for is part in the wars. The Second storyline, 25 years before, is when he tells about his part on the tale.

The problem here is that when a Dark Angel appears, first we think, to pay homage to the Imperial Guard he had help in the war asks him to tell the tale yet again.

As he tells his story we are ducking and firing in trenches with the trooper. It's quite believable. But after the tale the Dark Angel confronts him saying that somethings in his tale couldn't have happen because a) they were rookies and shouldn't know certain things and b) there was Bolt Pistol and Plasma Pistol shots whereas they had no weapons that could have done that damage. Antigone becomes scared and he is told the correct story, one he was asked never to tell. He tells the Dark Angel that at the last attack of the enemy another Dark Angel with two pistols help the soldiers fight the chaos horde. With his help, almost a godlike figurine, they were able to stop the attack long enough so the Dark Angels could reinforce their position. That space marine asked the troopers never to reveal his presence there or else he would kill them. Two of the troopers died that survive die never to regain conscious and Antigone never told anyone.

Hearing this, the dark angel becomes angry and shot Antigone for treachery. And you ask why? Well probably because the Dark Angel to help the Imperial Guard was no other that Cypher, the Fallen Angel.

So, in the end... This is a book to anyone who understands the Dark Angel lore or else this audiobook isn't going to make an impact and this raises a question... Who is Cypher? A anti-hero or an evil with a plan.

Excellent plot. My only question is... Why wait 25 years to confront the guard?

TV Series Review: The Librarians (Season 1) Noli timere malum, sed time heroa

I've recently finish watching the new series from SyFy The Librarians. I really enjoy it. It had so much of the movies that it really felt the continuation of the movies.  Even Noah Wyle appeared in four episodes. Supposedly a new organization wants to unleash magic into the world and the Librarian must thwarted them. After an initial confrontation the "Library" as gone to astray and Noah must focus all his attention to deal with it. But, the Library, being almost sentient draws near three new librarians plus a guardian... lo, them:

In the image we've got the first library thief Ezekiel Jones, we've got the mathematician who has auditory and sensory hallucinations linked to photographic memory and a cancer in the brain -Cassandra Cillian, then in the middle we've got the gorgeous guardian Eve Baird (NATO) and the last Librarian Jacob Stone who his expert in art and architecture and last but not least the curator of the annex Jenkins.

The interesting of this show is that it maintain the films pseudo-history lessons, comic wit and action scenes. The producers also gave some important twists that put me hold waiting for the next episode like Cassandra. Undoubtedly the best character in the series. She begins to double-cross the other Librarians to save herself then trying to redeem herself as her ego builts up throughout the first season ending with her almost bossing around the other two librarians.

It had some great episodes and easily followed even for someone who never watch the movies. The ending gave me two feelings... Why only 10 episodes and why Noah came back? The Librarians were growing as full-lengthened members. Now, Noah returns and sends them each their own way. It doesn't make any sense.  They were a team that use each one ability with Eve controlling them.

Let us see, if there is a Season Two and where shall it go... Nevertheless, well worth seeing.

Movie Review: Maze Runner

Today I've seen two movies. That's a lot for me. Usually I don't even see a movie per week. But after being left alone in the house because of my flu I watch Maze Runner and Apollo 18.

Maze Runner
I recently heard the novel at work and I enjoy the book. There was some problems with it but it was a good series. I can't say the same for the second book but...

Now, the movie:
I have some problems with it. Most of the tale was there, albeit much much less, but there. So, why Theresa never spoke in Thomas mind? Why, only 7 gladers left the maze since in the second book they were 21? How will they cope with that? Gally tried to kill thomas with a knife but in the movie it was a pistol... where did he get it? In the book, the woman greets the gladers then they are killed by man but in the movie she is already dead before meeting the gladers leaving a recording.

The movie left so much to be desire. Weak and gave no richness the book gave. I felt no sympathy  between Chuck and Thomas (in the book I understood the sacrifice, in the movie they had barely spoken five sentences). I think this movie needed more half hour. Let us hope for the second movie while I read the third. Not because I want but because I need to finish the trilogy. The second book is almost useless. Skipped it and stay with the world the writer created the first...

New Year Resolution

I am going to write more posts this year. It will help my english.

I will to write one per week. I have plenty of reviews published on Goodreads but haven't transcribed here.

I have this blog for 8 years. The first 4 years I made 88 posts. In 2010 I double it to 161. Then down to 62, 57, 29 and finally in 2014 with 28 posts.

I am afraid that one day I lose interest and be done with it. Not many people follow me, not many people are interested here BUT I always have done more for myself than to anybody else. So, I will continue...

This year my child will be born, probably in 30 of June, so let us see what comes out of my new year resolution.
