TV Series Review: The Night Manager (2017)

This was a fantastic server.  An adaptation from Le Carré novel it's a story about a night manager turned spy after he witness some woman beaten to death because he sent some confidential papers to someone in the British intelligence. Afterwards that woman is killed by Roper's man.
Roper, Night Manager, Jed, Angela and Corky

The night manager, then retreats to Switzerland, to work there are escape everything. (Btw he is called Pine) but after 4 years a woman called Angela Burr makes him a spy - to avenge Sophia (The woman kileld and to stop a arms dealer).

From this moment on, we follow Pine trying to enter Ropers tight group. There is crossing, double-crossing, love and death. Each episode makes your ass tight as you are eagerly waiting what is going to happen. I must say Roper (Hugh Laurie) is a very very interesting character. Hugh Laurie really outdone himself here.

We travel from Egypt to Switzerland and then to Spain, to Turkey, To Monaco, To Syrian Border and back to Egypt (and lets not forget England). Great scenarios, landscapes. Everything is really perfect.

There is no waste of time or scenes just to fill the time. Everything is important. This is a series to watch an EP per day to really take advantage of all information you are given. If you watch back to back, which you could, probably your attention and focus will not be ideal.

Advisable to anyone. 6 hours of pure thrill and drama.

I give this series 10 out 10 - That's how much I enjoy it.

Book Review: Shadowsun: The Last of Kiru's Line by Braden Campbell

Shadowsun: The Last of Kiru's Line Shadowsun: The Last of Kiru's Line by Braden Campbell
My rating: 4 of 10 stars

This book, even if interesting setting, after all there are few books written in Tau perspective failed completely.

Bad writing, worse action sequences and unbelieveable plot that went nowhere.

The only good part was Shadowsun life and her struggly to choose legacy versus duty/Tau mentality. I also enjoy the few instances that the writer gave informationa about Tau Society but at the same time I think he should have search a bit better. The incongruencies are also one of those things that make you wanna think How hard the writer researched.

For what I know reading other places about Tau (Fire Caste) and Shadowsun I don't think she and they would behave at times as they did. Quite weak. Maybe for a newcomer to the game it doesn't really matter but to me it does since I consider BL as Canon to GW worlds.

The humans protagonists, even the traitor, are no more than one-dimmension.

Should you read this? Yes if you are a fan of BL or tales about the Tau. If you are just arriving to 40K I would not reccomend this tale. There are better out there.

For the Greater Good.

Book Review: The Weight of Blood by David Daglish

The Weight of Blood The Weight of Blood by David Dalglish
My rating: 9 of 10 stars

I really enjoyed this novel. I enjoyed so much that I order through amazon the next four novels of this quintet (not counting with the sixth book that is going to be released because I really don't know if it's a begginning of a new trilogy or stand alone book with the same characters.

This is how dark fantasy novel should be. Weight of Blood is a tale about two brothers, half-orc, half-elf, who don't fit any of those worlds. One of the brothers Qurrah it's a Necromancer and Harruq it's a fighter (he isn't but soon learns how to be).

The brotheres kill a lot (mass murderers), including children. There is also great display of magic (necromancer) and so we really can't put them in the anti-heroes class. They are evil. Qurrah knows he is doing evil deeds and Harruq does the killing for his brother, and he has the power to decline so...

Side-Note: The similiraties with Caramon/Raistlin from Dragonlance are many. Raistlin being a powerful necromancer mage and Caramon a fighter. They both are Twins. One is a evil twisting bastard that do anything to advance in his arts and the other is a faithful brother who do anything for his brother. One of the differences his that Raistlin would never ask for Caramon to kill for him so he could study a corpse but Qurrah would. And Caramon would never do it, and Harruq would. There is also a Crysania Aurelia who enloves goofy Harruq and a powerful mage who helps RaistlinQurrah achieve his true power called Finstandatilus Velixar, but in this case he helps both brothers.

Believe me when I say this is a good book. Similar to some of Warhammer fiction like CL Werner novels life Wulfrik, Palace of the Plague Lord or even the Grey Seer novels.

Book Review: The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding by Agatha Christie

The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding by Agatha Christie
My rating: 6 of 10 stars

I read this book in portuguese. This books are translated by RBA and I think that their translator is quite good. (Usually I am against reading translated books but I have this collection so...)

First of all I have a theory... don't know if it's true or not but... three of these stories Agatha Christie complains or criticize the new age she was living. This book was written when she was 70 years old and since she had been born and live her adult life with a mentality I think the new age of the 40's 50's and 60's were taking her toll on her. This is also present in other books from Christie from this era. I think that Miss Marple, H Poirot and Agatha Christie are remnants from another era... Victorian era where Title, Honor and Family matter. This new age had no respect for their elders.

Now back to the review...

The main story, novella lenght, “The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding” Herculae Poirot was the first tale. Poirot is invited to attend Christmans at a house where, supposedly, is a stolen jewel. After meeting all the family and friends Poirot gets to work. There is a main plot and a sub-plot where a bunch of young kids want to see how good is Poirot. Of course, not only, Poirot solves the case but also teaches a lesson to the young kids.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest” gets it's attention to Poirot after reading the case in a newspaper. It seems that this story has a love Triangle. Mrs Clayton, a beautiful lady, asks Poirot for his help because she is convinced that Mr Rich is not the killer, even afterthe body was discovered at his house. Poirot talks to everyone and soon realizes the simalarities between this story and Othelo from Shakespeare.

“The Under Dog” has Poirot investigation a family murder (What kind more there is with Agatha Christie?) and Lady Astwell knows who the killer was. She just can't proove it. Nice little story with a more active Poirot (even searching everybody rooms).

In “Four and Twenty Blackbirds” was one of the funniest short stories I read from Agatha Christie. An elderly man eats the same things over ten years and one day he ordered something else... why? After being discovered killed Poirot tries to unveil the crime.

"The Dream" was a nice tale of a man who dreams everyday of suicide and after meeting Poirot he suddently kills himself. Was suicide or not? Poirot discovers...

“Greenshaw’s Folly” is the only story featuring Miss Marple. Again the differences between Poirot and Marple are there but the only way she would have discover this tale would be if she used her little grey cells as Poirot puts it.

ANIME: SUMMER 2017 (WHAT AM I WATCHING?) PART 2 of 2

Not lets go to part 2...

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits – Gave up after one episode. I Really don’t like this kind of animes…

Jikan no Shihaisha (Chrono Rulers) – Looks like an interesting tale about time-travel and supernatural. Lots of battle on the first episode and we get to know the first two main characters Victor Putin & We Putin (Putin really?). It’s one of those animes you watch but never surpass that level of “Meh”
o From: Project No. 9
o Theme: Supernatural, Shounen

Princess Principal – Our steampunk of the season. Basically our world is controlled by Britain (Albion) but there are people who don’t enjoy it and rebelled.  It’s basically spies & girls with awesome powers
o From: Actas, Studio 3Hz
o Theme: Action

Tenshi no 3P! (Angels 3Piece)– Ah our music anime of the season but now with loli and shut in. Very interesting so far. A shut it is lead to meet some lolis that want to start a band. He relunctly helps them. Well, he was coerced to do it. Basically…
o From: Project Nº9
o Theme: Slice of Life, Music, School

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni ( In a Different World with a Smartphone) – Recently released as a light novel (in english) it sound very generic and stupid. Well It doesn’t try to be better than it. Our main character will have a harem and he has powers beyond other people around them.
o From: Production Reed
o Theme: Adventure, Harem, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e (TV) –I really enjoy this anime so far. Very entertaining and at the same time very conscious about itself. The first image we have is one girl on a bus trying to give a seat to this old woman and nobody getting up. Afterwards we learn they all study in one school for the best of the best. Our main character is on a class called 1-D where all the weak go. Our main character has many problems talking to everybody else and one of our main characters is very “I don’t need anyone” while the other want to be friends with everyone
o From: Lerche
o Theme: Comedy, Romance, School

Hajimete no Gal (My girlfriend is a gal) – This anime is more straightforward than others. Usually animes we see mostly boys and girls rather shy and so. In this there isn’t that. We have a boy Junichi that is “coerced” by his friends to hit on a gal (Yukana) and he starts by begging for her to meet and go out with her. The girl is not what he expects. Very comedy centered. Very perverted (in a good way anime)
o From: NAZ
o Theme: Ecchi, Romance, Comedy, School, Shounen

Ikemen Sengoku: Toki wo Kakeru ga Koi wa Hajimaranai – Boring, uninteresting crappy little anime that I will drop it. Animation sucks and plotwise there isn’t. Gonna watch one more episode just to be sure it’s boring.
o From: TMS Entertainment, Jinnis Animation Studio
o Theme:  Historical, Romance (Chibi?)

Clione no Akari – Ah, we’re we go to a story that starts with bullying. Some are bullying a girl and others want to do but do nothing.
o From: drop
o Genre: ??

Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart  (Nora, Princess, and Stray Cat) – Basically a girl transformed a boy into a cat and now the wanted it back. 3 minute anime. It’s comedy basically…
o From: W-Toon Studio, DMM.futureworks
o Genre: Comedy and Ecchi… (Where)

Mahoujin GuruGuru – A comedy about a hero and a witch trying to save the kingdom. Very funny. I laugh a lot. Excellent animation and sounds. Oh.. Old-RPG Style!
o From: Production I.G
o Theme: Adventure, Comedy, Magic, Shounen, Fantasy

Musekinin Galaxy Tylor – I can’t even say what’s it’s about. Going to drop but I want to see one more episode just to be sure.
o From: Seven
o Theme: Military, Sci-Fi, Space, Comedy & Paradoy

Gamers! – So in a regular school the most popular girl loves games and starts a club because of it. She invites our Otaku MC and after a brief introduction to the club with several games play he snubs her. Everyone is perplexed. He doesn’t want to play games in competitive way like the club do. I really enjoy the first episode. Very comic situations. Very interesting MC.
o From: Pine Jam
o Theme: Comedy Romance, School

New Game!! – This is going to be a sequel so no problems there. Haven't watch it yet but I enjoy the first. It's a casual anime about how to make a videogame while dealing with interaction between five gals... It's another Idiot's Guide lol There are a lot out there.

Kaito x Ansa (Nazotokine 2) – This is going to be a sequel so I know what’s coming (crapy anime) – don’t know why they changed the name though….
New Game!! – This is going to be a sequel so no problems there.

Ballroom e Youkoso – I thought this was going to be a boring anime about balldance I really enjoy. No doubt it’s a bit different from what I normal watch but… Let’s go
o From: Productions IG
o Theme: Comedy, Sports, Drama, Romance, School

Shoukoku no Altair (Project Altair) – This anime it’s a pseudo-historical anime about the kingdom of Turkiye  (Ottaman Empire) and The Empire (Germany). There is only one main character called Mahmut. I really enjoy the first episode fill with drama and adventure with mystery inbetween. Almost no action scenes. Love the hawk!
o From: MAPPA
o Theme: Adventure, Historical, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen

After watching the first episode this is my TOP Ten, Eleven, Twelve Thirteen (in my preference Order)

Book Review: Enemy Within the Skull by Gregory Kern

Enemy Within the Skull Enemy Within the Skull by Gregory Kern
My rating: 5 of 10 stars

This was a different book from Gregory Kern's and Captain Kennedy. Murders are happening on earth. Normal, influential, persons are turning crazy and killing everyone sorrounding them.

Cap Kennedy and his gang goes from Terra to a prison planet and then to confront an evil scientist.

The beginning of this novel is more investigation centered and then it turn to full action narrative.

I enjoyed the book and in my opinion is an improvment comparing with the three previous books.

BUT

Don't get me wrong, with 120 pages long, nowadays considered a novella, this book is just what he was written for. A quick reading material. Don't expect anything more than that.

Book Review: Piper in the Woods by Philip K. Dick

Piper in the Woods by Philip K. Dick, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Adventure Piper in the Woods by Philip K. Dick, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Adventure by Philip K. Dick
My rating: 8 of 10 stars

Another short story from Philip K Dick that I read I enjoyed greatly. This tale is set on a fictions asteroid where people are turning to plants... not turning as gaining leaves but thinking and acting as plants.

Henry Harris goes from earth to investigate the incidents until he finds that the "piper" that turns them into a plant is a psychological side effect from their high-presurred military job... a escape vault sort of phenomenon. The ending is quite good. Twilight Zone scenario.

Audiobook Review: When the Mountain Shook by Robert Abernathy

When the Mountain Shook When the Mountain Shook by Robert Abernathy
My rating: 1 of 10 stars

What? Ok... this was a future earth after an holocaust. Right. I get that. Evolution versus technology. Yes... but so what? There was no point in this story... maybe it's part of a novel but it doesn't feel like nothing. It was a pointless reading material. I don't get it. Sorry.

Book Review: Books of Blood: Volume One by Clive Barker

Books of Blood: Volume One Books of Blood: Volume One by Clive Barker
My rating: 7 of 10 stars

This is the first book of two sets of trilogies of short stories. So far there are no interconnected stories but from what I read somewhere all 6 books were written in 18 months.

First of all - I enjoy reading Clive Barker's novels but there is something there that I can't put my finger on, that makes me drift me off. Nevertheless is prose is quite good for an horror writer.

The Book of Blood it's the first tale and what a start. The story is set in a haunted house as a women and a man are trying to communicate with the dead. As a man tries to cheat the living saying that he, and only he, could talk with the undead he uncovers that the undead albeit silence and hidden are there. And they have plans of their own. 6/10

The Midnight Meat Train - A good tale about a killer who is getting old. But he kills for something more important than him, his victims or even the city. It kills for the secret rulers of New York City. Quite interesting tale with a good finale twist." 7/10

The Yattering and Jack - This tale is kind of a blend between comic horror. Clive Barker's Mister B. Gone as the same feeling. A minor daemon is sent to earth to haunt a person. This daemon - Yattering, tries first smoothly to make the human go crazy. Did I close the lights? Why is so hard to open the door and other things like that. But this human as almost a stoic personality only says " Che sera, sera". As he gets more frustating the daemon becomes more reckless and careless. The daemonn can do anything BUT cannot touch his victim directly or leave the house. The ending was quite good. A twist and we learn why the "victim" is behaving the way he behaves. Quite good story. My only complain was the dead cats... 9/10

Pig Blood Blues as my least favourite story of the lot. I just couldn't get it. After reading ten pages I gave up. I'm sorry. Maybe in a second try...

Sex, Death and Starshine This one was a good tale. Maybe this one could be turn into a theatre play. I think it would work. This tale is one that I think I have seen somewhere... in some tv series mayhaps... This tale is set on a theatre that is going to be demolished and they are enacting a play that had passed the same theatre many years ago. The female character, who is sleeping with the director, is not fully committed with the play. A man, who was connected with the theatre several years back has other plans for the main female character. The story has an eerie feeling. An eering feeling only presented on spooky theatres. I like the story but I had another feeling. This story is not original. It has been done several times over the years. From the Gothic era to today. Nevertheless Barker creats and changed it to give his own touch. 7/10

In the Hills, the Cities This tale is about two male lovers who are roaming through old Yugoslavia. I enjoy the characters and Barker really gives them life and feelings. It's hard to write about gay couples. But Barker, a gay himself, really does it. This book was written in the early eighties and there was few stories with gay characters. The love scene between two gays, I bet, was one of the first in horror fiction. Usually when there is a gay character, his sexuality is not that relevant to the story, and is sexuality with another male character is not even discussed. congratulations Barker. I am not gay or anything like that but I've read a couple stories where a male gay character is presented and usually his sexuality is not even relevant. Brian Keene's Dead Sea is one of this times. More.. He is a black gay character. But neither is skin tone or sexuality has any relevance to the story. It could be a Androgyny martian for all that matters. ---- Now back to the story. So this two cities fight. And what do they fight? Like transformers. All the habitants transform into a gigantic transformer and battle. But that's it. It has no impact. Maybe it's a sociologic critique...but I am afraid that I don't get it.

Overall, this first anthology has some good stories. Pretty solid on its own. The book has almost 200 pages so it's not dull even if in a couple stories I would cut some pages. It's weird horror anthology that encompass different kinds of horror.

Highly recommended.

Book Review: Doctor Who and the Enemy of the World by Ian Marter

Doctor Who and the Enemy of the World Doctor Who and the Enemy of the World by Ian Marter
My rating: 6 of 10 stars

I really enjoy this one. Both novel and television episode were done in a good syle. Even if the tv series was better. Why? Because in the novel we don't get anything else besides what's on the tv. That's a shame. When you serialize you expect something more. But alas, that did not happenend.

So, Dr Who has a double and that double is a evil genius. That was interesting. You've come to see Dr Who with an charismatic personality that has power to be the master of the world. A person with unlimited timelife with the possibility to change the past can make things happenend his own way.

I enjoy that this tale is set on Australia and then Hungary. You've got a more important part from Jamie and Victoria than previous novels.

It's a nice addition and thank the fans for recovering this recording after 20 or 30 years.

2017 Review (Half-Year)

6 months have passed since the beginning of the year. I must say it was an excellent year in terms of watching anime and tv series. Not so much on movies.
Books, well that’s another show.

In terms of animes I watch 1020 – that’s a staggering 5,7 episodes per day! Finish 105 animes series (69 Series & 36 Movies or OVA).

TV series I watched 218 episodes – that’s 1,2 per day and only 53 movies.

All together I watched 1287 shows – which gives us 7,2 per day!!!
This last four months were the best ever with 955 shows which give us a ratio of 8 per day!

In terms of books I’ve read  14 books (roughly 2,33) per month. Which is a lot better than last year I must say – if it wasn’t all the audiobooks I would have read the same amount of this year!

Let us do better this next 6 months!!!

Book Review: Realms of Infamy by Various

Realms of Infamy Realms of Infamy by James Lowder
My rating: 8 of 10 stars

This is a collection of stories set on Forgotten Realms. The Forgotten Realms problem is that it never evolves. It focus on a target audiance in the end we know the good guys win. That's why I am more into Black Library and it's warhammer and 40K publications. Even if they have an audiance of teens you never know how it's going to end. Not everything will be alright. Just because you are "good" that's no reason to win. You can fail.

Said that this short stories focus more on the bad guys from this realm. What's interesting is that most of this "bad" guys are more of anti-heroes and not evil.

Most of this stories are good, believe me on that.
The More Things Change by Elaine Cunningham is a tale about Elaith Craulnober. This tale tells us how and why he fell... from grace. There are some scenes their that are not that explained. Probably I had to read some of her novels.

The Meaning of Lore by Barb Hendee - If this tale had an evil characters I don't know what was. I didn't relate this tale with infamous. This tale is about a loremaster of Oghma (Lord of Knowledge) and a pursuit to knowledge.

The Third Level by R. A. Salvatore- Well, well... Entreri. This guy is evil but we care about him. RA Salvatore is a great creator of characters and I think Entreri is one of his best. He makes an evil character and works so darn hard to give him motives and explaining that we care for him. This tale tells us about his first kill and how he enter the Thieves Guild.

Blood Sport by Christie Golden is a tale that evolves Jander Sunstar. How is he evil? Probably the Shark (vampire hunter) is the evil of this tale. Neverthless in this tale the Shark is trying to destroy the Vampire and will do everything to achieve. Top notch Christie!

Vision by Roger E. Moore is a good tale about goblins. Even the main character is one. He tells us the way goblins feel about the new ways and the old ways. It's truly good My main problem is that goblins are suppossedly to be stupid and our main character, Kergis, is nothing like that. He is rather smart.

Not counting with two weak stories, I think this is one of the best anthologies Forgotten Realms published. It's a nice way to see how the "bad" guys are seen. But as I said before, if you want a evil character then turn around and head for Warhammer Fantasy. There are all full lenght books with evil characters. Not anti-heroes. Real evil characters that will kill your puppy and kidnapp your wife... but in the end you will like them. Believe me. You will.

o   From: Studio Hibari
o   Theme: Comedy, Sports, Seinen

Basically at 16 each boy and girl receives a communication from the Government telling them who they will be married to. Yukari loves Misaki and in the same day he confesses to her he receives a letter telling him that he is to be married to Lilina.  This anime arrives at my top 5 of the season (so far)

Konbini Kareshi
·         Isekai Shokudou (Restaurant to Another World) – This show is going down because I really don’t understand where it’s going. Basically it’s about a restaurant that once per week travels to other dimension and serves food to very particular people. I really don’t know where this is going. On mal the rating is on 7.22. I really doubt it can stay that high…

·         Aho Girl – This show is gonna be awesome! I have no doubts about it. A very genuine stupid girl and her tribulations with her childhood friend… She even asks one girl if she can grab her boobs (for science) haha. Oh and she loves Bananas!

·         Tsurezure Children: After the first episode I have no opinion so far. Looks like a mix of Romance And Comedy with some strange art. Let us see it’s good.

o   Theme: Comedy, Romance, School, Shounen

·         Fate/Apocrypha – This show is was one I thought of not watching BEFORE watching the rest of Fate/Stay night series. But so far they throws us some history that I think will help me understand better the world.
o   From: A-1 Pictures
o   Theme: Action, Historical, Supernatural, Drama, Magic, Fantasy

·         Nana Maru San Batsu – This shows looks boring. Basically it’s a how about Quizz club. Unless it goes a different path it’s one of those I am gonna drop

·         Skirt no Naka wa Kedamono Deshita. Is this hentai? If not, it sure looks like it.
o   From: Magic Bus
o   Theme: Drama, Romance , Ecchi (sure looks like Hentai…)

Made in Abyss
·         Netsuzou Trap – Ah… While the other one was boys love this was is girls love. Two pairs of lovers and now one of the girls is trying to seduce the other kissing her and such. Practice! It’s for science Aho Girl says…

·         Saiyuuki Reload Blast – This is a sequel of a 2004 anime. Full of action on a apocalyptic world (or at least some fantasy demonic world) where four friends battle a horde. I think this is going to be episodic (like saving a girl here, then a boy and so on).  First episode was good but I don’t know.

o   Theme: Action, Adventure, Supernatural, Comedy, Drama, Josei

·         Konbini Kareshi (Convenience Store Boyfriends) – another show with so bad ratings 6.25. Sure looks nice to me. It sure looks like a mix of Romance & Slice of Life…
o   From: Studio Pierrot
o   Theme: Slice of Life (no romance?)

·         Dive!! Another Yaoi? It sure looks like it.  This anime is about some youngsters battling to go be part of Japan Olympic team
o   From: Zero-G
o   Theme: Comedy, Sports

·         Made in Abyss – This anime came out of nowhere. With some of interesting graphics I’ve seen, very cartoonish but with a story that really impressed me. Unless it goes another way (which I don’t believe it will) It’s going to be awesome anime
o   From: Kinema Citrus
o   Theme: Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

·         Vatican Kiseki Chousakan (Vatican Miracle Examiner) – Can’t understand why this show has a rating on MAL of 6.36. I really doubt it stays that low. I bet by the end it’s going up and achieve 7 at least. This show looks really good.  Basically it’s about two guys investigating the so called miracles. The theme is awesome. Gothic, Scary…

·         Hitorijime My Hero: Ah. Ahoy Yaoi… This show about a teanager who changes his way of life after meeting a teacher. Some BL situations here. So far I’ve enjoy it BUT…

o   Theme: Slice of Life, School, Shounen Ai

·         Centaur no Nayami  - Either this is going to be one of the best animes of the season or else it’s gonna suck badly. It has some interesting elements about evolution and politics ( I know the synopsis don’t even mention it but…  “This anime is kind of odd so far... First of all the all evolution ideas... Well I don't mind about the all new races and such but how did the teacher knew about "if evolution went another way?" - Then as she speaks about evolution some officials or so are there controlling. Then the last sing our national anthem...hmmm there is more than meet the eye...  And lastly the girl saying that she couldn't sit on the centaur back or else she was going away to a correctional facility.... Oh and don't forget equality is more important than civil rights thing - damn talk about french revoution to a new extreme. Either this anime goes and explores this dystopia setting or they aren't talking about it and it's only going to be a romance - school boring anime... I hope for the former.
