ANIME REVIEW: Toradora vs Just Because vs Tsuki Ga Kirei (2017)

When we watch an anime with a similar genre of another we previously watch we make connections and draw our own conclusions on each one is best and why it is. I am now talking about Romance in anime.
Toradora

I've watch Orange (Telecom Animation Film) in September of 2016 although I will not draw any comparisons with this ones and you will understand why. They same happens with Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend and Ano Natsu de Matteru  (Waiting in the Summer) (Although this one is due to it's sci-fi moments but it's very similar with those three in the Subject).

I made a review on Fuuka and I could put here on VS but I won't.
Kuzu no Honkai (Scum's Wish) is more mature so I won't put here to compare

What I am comparing you ask? Romance Anime where since the beginning  you know is going to happen. Tsuki Ga Kirei you know Akane Mizuno is going to be with Kotarou Azumi and Chinatsu is going to get dumped. People who rooted for Chinatsu knew they were going to suffer.

In Just because it's not that easy although the several pictures that made us aware the anime is going to happen are about Mio Natsume & Eita Izumi and any other character is going to be very sad.

In Toradora is not that easy. Both Taiga Aisaka & Ryuuji Takasu love different people but from the first couple episodes (this one had 25 while the others had 12/13) you know that ship is going to happen.

In Tsuki Ga Kirei is about the journey of two youngsters discovering themselves and trying to cope with school while trying to work things out. They start dating early on and we get to see that relation grow. I love how they do it and the anime didn't focus so much on conversations - the best moments where silent ones. The Line messages and so on. It was a pure joy of a anime and one of my favorite this year (top 3 no  doubt). It's on my top 10 on MAL. It's a show about simplicity and love discovery. Both characters work and try to make it work.

Although my only criticism is that this is a love like that one you wished but will never happen. Perfect love. You probably will connect more to both contenders than this two characters. One has the same qualities and hobbies and finally asks her out just to be turn down (because he does not know she loved another) and the other a girl who tries even as she knows that she will be turn down (a closure as she tells us).

Just Because (Who are the center boy and girl)
Just Because it's set on 2 months or so of school and about the returning of Izumi to his old school where Mio (his crush) still lives and studies. He tries to understand his feeling towards her AND towards Komiya. One thing that this anime failed (in my humble opinion) is that it made us hate Natsume - Natsume liked Souma who in turned love Morikawa. Izumi saw Natsume declare herself to Souma and being turned down. With the appearance of Izumi Natsume feelings towards him appear. BUT she is totally underdeveloped - she does nothing and still gets the boy Whereas Komiya talks to Izumi, takes pictures of him, they went to see alone things, she declares to him, she makes him a yearbook and still Izumi turns her down. It's not that strange that on MAL and some forums they criticize their ending - Komiya crying alone in the end was heartbreaking moment. I was on team Komiya because she was funny and she really loved Izumi going great lengths to demonstrate that where Natsume did nothing at all - just moaning dragging her silly feet. Until the 11 episode I had great expectations and my rating was 9/10. But that finale is stupid. Throughout the last 6/7 episodes Izumi and Natsume both say they are going to conffess right before going to university then when we know they both love one another they "show" us in anti-climatic line messages... That's like making a great dish to your family, hours on it, being on the table with all people salivating and then throwing to the garbage and asking if they want to go Macdonalds and saying "Hey it's still food no?"

Toradora is a bit different from the previous ones. From the beginning there is a complex relationship between those two characters who join together to get the girl/boy they want. As the show progress we learn and start to get hints that probably what they are looking for is not the other two people but one another. It's very simple and not that much to talk but it's one of the best anime (romance or not) I've watch. Taiga is the personification of Tsundere and Ryuuji of love. I'ts magical.

Tsuki Ga Kirei
On MAL Toradora has a rating of 8,41 (Ranked 159) and 513K Voters (but has more 8/9 years that the next two)
Just Because 7.55 (but I bet it's going down) (Ranked 1462) and 11K voters (don't forget it's this season anime)
Tsuki Ga Kirei  8.36 (Ranked 190) with 58K voters

Conclusion
Toradora has great characters and it's a more fast pace love story where everyone can get another. You can ship in three ways but only one will win. It's one of those instances where you get to have a "team".

Tsuki Ga Kirei plot wise is more simple - there isn't. But it's more focus on the discovery of what it means to be in love and how to overcome some obstacles.

Just Because is a show that has a great setting, love the art, love the five characters and made my choice of how to ship them - but I cannot accept the creators went the easy way  on the finale (although more probable and predictable).

In my voting system both Toradora and Tsuki Ga Kirei get 10 while Just Because I could vote between 7 or 8.

2017 Year In Review - Anime

So another year went by and I must say I am quite happy with the outcome in terms of watching Anime and TV Series.

All in all I watch 1855 anime episodes (with 3 more days to end) and 620 TV Series episodes.

In terms of anime I finished 185. Between series (123) ovas and movies (62)
Interesting is that most of them are seasonal anime (73).

2017_Q01_Winter - 15
2017_Q02_Spring - 27
2017_Q03_Summer - 20
2017_Q04_Fall - 11 (Plus 4 watching)

So basically that's it.
Next year I am going to try to choose 10 to 15 shows each season and watch them. Then watching older anime... Let us see If I can do it.

Favourite of the Season (some seasons I put two because it's a close call)

2017_Q01_Winter
1 - Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil)
2 - KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! Vol 2

2 - Aho Girl

2017_Q04_Fall

  • Koe no Katachi ( A Silent Voice)  2016_Q03_Summer

Anime Review: Gamers! (Summer 2017)

Gamers! is another anime that heavily focus on comedy and misunderstanding. Each episode we follow Keita Amano and his new friends Tasuku and his girlfriend Aguri plus Chiaki & Tendou.

Tendou is the most beautiful girl in the school and surprisingly  asks Keita to be part of a Gamers Club but Keita refuses because he doesn't like to play games against other players. He enjoys coop games. Tendou who was never refused by anyone in her life immediately falls for him but he is  not what you can call a people's person. Meanwhile Tasuku wants to help Keita get Tendou forms a group to talk about games and invites Chiaki who immediately dislikes Keita because some stupid game argument.

Meanwhile Tendou and Keita starts dating and Chiaki discovers Keita is her mobile game partner and producer of the game he enjoys.

From this moment on it's misunderstanding behind misunderstanding that got a little boring I may say. This anime could have been made into a 6/7 episode series. This series could have been better and because it drag on and on I watch the last episodes just hoping it to be over and to know who would he get (Well he had Tendou so you know...)

I can honestly say it's another otaku oriented high school students who enjoy playing video games with a hint of romance inbetween. Don't forget moe and harem...

Amano, our main characters don't understand love period. He think that life happens like visual novels Japanese people enjoy. Uehara points his wrong way. This anime, although probably not meant to do that, it's a criticism on the Otaku way of life presuming that they prefer their 2D world and romance in spite of 3D. This is highly offensive in my opinion. I consider myself an Otaku although I work, have a wife and a child.

What I wanted to say I enjoy the anime BUT I felt a bit offensive about it - although the comedy behind it was good. As I said previously they overused the same situation over and over and over. This anime could have been shortened to 6/7 episodes.

Anime Review: Hellsing (Fall 2001)

I somewhat enjoy this anime but overall I must say - it was a boring. Basically we follow Seras Victoria a human turn into a Vampire by a elusive secretive vampire called Alucard (Dracula).

Most episodes have connections between them and have a continuity feeling and so I wouldn't advice to watch separately for full (or not) enjoyment.

As I said most of the episodes we follow either Seras Victoria or the Lady Sir Integra but at the same time it's a show about the villains.

Alucard, supposedly the main character only appears at particular moments of the episode - only to find myself aghast with the weak character he is. He is so secretive so aloof througought the series that besides episode 9 (we never really know anything about him and even in that episode we don't get that much information).

He is immortal being with no apparent flaws at all since he cannot die - in two episodes he even return from decapitation and total desintigration (only his head remained. Oh and he wins everytime.

A lot of psychadelic effects a some unsanwered questions. In the end it was in my humble opinion a time wasting anime to watch. Should have watch Hellsing Ultimate which focus more on the manga while this one only half the episodes do. The last four eps with the new evil arriving is totally created and not based on the manga.

In the end can I advice it you to watch it? No.
If you want to watch a vampire focus ainme then go Vampire Hunter D.

TV Series Review: Zapped (Season 1 & 2)

First of all not to confuse with another Zapped TV Series for children.

I am going to review Zapped a British fantasy comedy TV Series with two seasons under her belt. The First season was only 3 episodes and the second season with 6 episodes.

First of all the feeling I have watching this series is a the same as reading a Terry Pratchett novel with a hint of Harry Potter (subtle but's it's there)

Each episode you will have the smile in your face from the beginning to the end. Some episodes are truly comic. Its that British comedy that UK cannot do it. It's not ROTFLOL but LOL... you understand this?

We follow Brian Weaver a temp that it's transported to another world where he meets and befriends a soothsayer (with hardly any knowledge of divinity) a dunked wizard and a half-giant half-dwarf (How did they made love??) plus a ex-warrior turned bartender that is always saying "it reminds me that time..." but no-one lets him talk.

AsI said it's a comedy that puts silly situations and make you not laugh but smile and tilt your head.

Each episode we follow Brian as he tries to get home but every time something happens. With each episode 25 minute mark it might feel short BUT it feels a lot more because there are a lot more going on and a lot of situations happen in such short time.

Should I recommend it to you?

Well if you like Britcom then you will enjoy this one without any doubt. If you enjoy Terry Pratchett or Fantasy with a hint of comedy then go ahead. After all with 25 minutes watch the first episode and decide yourself. It's not the best series BUT it's good 7/10.

TV Series Review: Future Man (Season 1)

Future Man is a series released by Hulu and what a great series it was.

Hulu is a subscription service like netflix although with far less money. They have released a lot of interesting stories.

The Path, Chance (on my ToWatchList), Dimension 404 (Also on my ToWatchList, Marvel's Runaways (Also on TWL) and of course the master series The Handmaid's Tale.

As they release more series there are more money so... Some are on my radar Castle Rock (Stephen King Anthology sort of ); Dawn and The Warriors (a new tale of the movie The Warriors from 1979 which I adored).

Well back to the Future Man.

In this series we follow Josh Futturman as he "waste" his life away in his parent's house (Gabe and Diane) and work as a janitor while playing a video game called Bionic Wars that nobody finished.

When he finish the game two humans appears (Tiger (woman) and Wolf (man)) that say that he is the Savior of the future. Supposedly the game was made to discover a person who could help us change the future - unfortunally nothing is what it seems.

From this moment on it's time travel to time travel to kill Doctor Elias Kronish 'cause he is the destroyer of humanity.

Every single episode is filled with laughing situations, sexual innuendo and action scenes

Each episode is unique - one focus on James Cameron (after all he is a visionary); or we follow Corey Hart (A singer); Some they twist the rules of time travelling making one instance where Josh almost impregnates his mother Diane.

Tiger and Wolf when they arrive at the past are pure caveman that are born to fight and as the series progress they change. There are a couple of episodes solely focus on them as there are some focus on Josh. In terms of character development this series is a a must to anyone.

In terms of comedy I have to say that most of time I had a smile on my face (episode 9 is one of the most insane/funny episodes ever)

I sincerely would advice this series to anyone who loves Sci-Fi and Comedy with a action inbetween. Great characters and some closure on the overall series. Basically they can make a season 2 but if this ends like this it's also a very nice ending.

A bunch of odds to other series and movies plus books, video-games and memes. 8/10

No 21

Not Happy 14
More or Less 7

Why do I do these October Horror Fest? Well first of all is to watch movies since probably a third of the movies I watch it's from this month alone. And this way I feel obligated to watch them but also because I love watching them BUT it's a strain to watch... Next year I am going to do something different I must say...

If I had to suggest some movies would be Ringu (Great movie from japan); Circle (as a study of human psychological)  and The Bar/Babysitter (because it mixes with comedy and apocalpytical)

TV Series: Dead Set (2008) October Horror Fest (31)

Dead Set is a UK TV Series that doesn't try to emulate Walking Dead or Z Nation which is nice change.

Basically we follow a group of people trapped within a house that is host to somekind of Big Brother or such. A Zombie apocalypse is unleashed and they are totally oblivion to it.

From the second episode we follow two groups of people trying to escape, ones trying to get in and others trying to get out.

It's quite interesting the way the characters interact and react to one another. There are a lot tension and each character is flesh out BUT each one is different as the other.

We've got the girl with big tits and only want to be famous, you've got the gay man who basically is a woman, the jockey, the black dude and /or the old pervert man.

Plus we've got the indian guy who is trying to get to his girlfriend who works in the station (but she cheats on him) and we also have the producer who is a Gordon Ramsey 5.0 in terms of language and way he treat persons...

Well predictable (at least the faith of some of them) but the ending was a bit unexpected BUT hardly unrealistic. Zombies are hard to beat BUT running zombies? very hard indeed...

With only 5 episodes running 150m I consider it a big movie and although they could have done a bit better BUT nevertheless a nice addition to the zombie mythos. As I said - it could have be made into 10 episodes dwelling more on the survival and relations between characters BUT this is also fine

Some nudity (The big titty girl) and only 2 or 3 seconds in a mirror. The violence is there with the killing and munching and biting. Awesome stuff.

The movie is also a criticism of "Zombies" in terms of people watching and "devouring" every single program like Big Brother. In 2008 when the hype was up there with half a dozen shows in the same kind.

Well nevertheless a good show TV Series with a proper ending.

Fun Spoiler Facts
- Female Main Protagonist
- Some Nudity (5 or so seconds all combined)
- Not Happy Ending

Movie Review: I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) October Horror Fest (30)

I watched this one and now I hope I've didn't but life is that way... It's good rating BUT I don't understand why. It's crappy movie with some horror elements. It's more terror than horror and we follow a nurse taking care of a elderly woman - we hope something happens in the most boring 80 minutes of my life but nothing really do. The ending was rushed and strange... I've lost 90m of my life... I WANT THEM BACK!

Fun Spoiler Facts
- Female protagonist
- No Nudity
- It ended  - who the fvck cares... but if you really really ask me, well it's a happy ending - she dies and it's a ghost!

Movie Review: Ringu (1998) October Horror Fest (29)

Ahh Ringu the movie that start it all... Having read the book I watched the movie hoping that it follow the book... the american version did not.

Well, we start by following two BFF talking about a tape one of them saw and at one point one them dies (horribly).

Her aunt is a journalist and starts investigating what had happened and begins to learn more about other people dying with the same thing.

After some time investigating she learns the whereabouts of the tape and watches the movie. Afterwards she returns home with the tape and asks the help to her son's father (Ex husband). She copies the tape and he agrees to watch so he can wait.

Then the movie goes for 40 minutes as they go from one place to another until they learn more about the tape and the monster Sadako. Meanwhile their child watches the tape while staying at the grandfather's. They realizes the final resting place of the woman who started it all and try to uncover th

e secrets. As the 7 days are up she doesn't die and they think they "cure" her. But alas that is not what happened and one day later her ex-husband is kill by the tape.

The movie ends as she makes a new tape and calls her father (possible making him watch the tape on behalf of her child so he don't died - we never watch it but it is implied).

Fun Spoilers Facts
Female Protagonist
No Nudity
Reasonable Happy Ending  (There are sequels)

Movie Review: The Bar (2017) October Horror Fest (28)

This was one of my favorite movies in this October Horror Fest marathon... It's a Spanish movie where we follow several people inside a Bar.  We've got not much information about it but basically a man is shot dead just outside the street and then another and everyone escapes the streets...

The'y got no more information and they start blaming one another about terrorism and stupid things. Then they find a guy in the bathroom dead from some unknown disease and the police/army surrounds the bar. As they turn on one another some are exiled to the basement where they try to escape by a small hole that leads to the sewers.

The movie is funny but horrific (not because of monsters or spooky) but because people in stressful situations do a lot of stupid shit... It's really interesting in that way - like watching rats in a fire within a maze...

The police made fake news saying they were isolating that area because of a fire (no fire was existing at the time) and they went through the tunnels turning on each other until only the girl left (our main protagonist) - leaving several questions unanswered like what really happened? Was it a virus?  What happened after she left to the streets - after all she was traumatized and walking in the streets of madrid only with her bra... Enfin

Good movie, would love a sequel...
