9/52 Friday Update - Books Read; Currently Reading & TBR (and bought)

Last week of the month and it was a good reading month.

I finish 2 more books and I hope to finish at least 2 more until the end of the month. Swan Song which was my great magnus opus of the month and I've read 356 pages so far. My goal is to read between 50 to 100 pages per day. Maybe finish next month? And after Great Hunt will suffer the same treatment. I don't want to be reading any of those after March which will be Warhammarch?

8/52 Friday Update - Books Read; Currently Reading & TBR (and bought)

So I Went to Ireland. Got myself a couple of books that really interesting. Beautiful places, some interesting stores but I had hoped for more. My wife thanks Irish people not having that much 2 hand stores with plenty of diversity. Still bought 10 books. Not to bad.

Warhammarch 2024 TBR

Welcome to my first Warhammer March - Warhammarch of 2024. I already have October Horror Fest and I will start having (which I didn't said but had Sci-Fi January.

I love warhammer worlds and I've been neglecting them absurdity. I still have all their books ever publish in paperback format (I don't collect ebooks and I've collected some Limited Edition).

Book Review: The Ice Ghost by Kathleen O'Neal Gear

I am going to rate this 48 out of 100.

First of all, it drags a lot on the treking in the caves and not that much development. IT suffers from being the middle book.

So, this story follows the previous novel , but several moons (months) have passed. The peace between SeaLion & Rust are gone and Rust has almost destroyed Sealion. Of 100 something there are now only 20. After a brief parley Torgon (of Rust) asks for Quiller to guide him to Lynx and in return they won't kill the remaining Sealions. She a accepts and their journey starts. Meanwhile we've got glimpses of Lynx living with the supposedly last Jermen alive but slowing dying (don't know why since he is still around 1000 years in the future).

I am not going to spoil everything but after meeting they then travel again to a caves where a old woman (another Jermen) lives. Stuff happen and the book end.

First of all, my main problem and to me it was too much was the pov. There are three pov now instead of two. We've got now Rabbitear and each chapter is around 3 to 5 pages. Each one is 1st person perspective and so at some point it just blends and got me confuse a lot... who am I reading now? This was disconcerting.

Then the plot is just as I've said middle book. You've got a couple semi answers and more questions let's hope book 3 wraps it up. I am going to read this month. It was to be one per month but to be honest I Want this to be over. We understand now a bit.. Scientists developed something that give birth to something that lives in the water and a ice age appear. (what are the giants that they talk about?) . Scientists (don't know why Jermen comes from that) battle and some development creatures that can adapt to cold. Basically Denisovans and neatherdals (the two branches before our current evolutionary state). Basically they are redoing the past and in x thousand years they will again change to current homo sapiens (who the heck know that would happen). This idea is basically focus on the theory that evolution is scripted go to a-b-c and so on.. but is it? That's why we've you've got all of this branches... Well let's see how Kathleen grabs us on book 3.

Overall, I didn't enjoy as much this.

Book Review: Apocalypse by Brian Bowyer

I am going to rate 55 out of 100 due to the finale.

In this we follow several groups\characters that meet up for a finale that the backover hints. You've got Miranda & Will a young couple of 16 years old, You've got Amber of 12, Verna 42, Joseph, and Gwyneth and her father. All of the stories will lead to the finale that the book cover talks but for that to happen we need to go through 350 pages. The book ha 410. So it was a bit odd. So what's this tale about you may ask, and it's about death. It's about a apocalypse where people who have their phone on their arms (a new think of the future) starts dying or becoming assassins - hearing voices and such.

So far so good? Yes.

The characters are non-likable at most , distasteful, awful bunch at the least. All have some major psychological problems and they are already either killers, cannibals or truly crazy ones. Apart from 2 characters I think they are all crazy and hard to root - and one of them dies. I am not going to spoil much but one of the most wicked is Amber a 12 year old that has been killing animals since she was a child, raped since she was 7 and killer well since she was 11 I think. She enjoys sex and drinks more than your average drunkard. Too be honest that's a constant of all of this characters, there is not one that is not a drunk.

So, as you can see this book is not to root for your characters. This book is for the spatterpunk fanatics who want something evil. IF you have enjoyed Tim Curran you will feel right at home. This reminds me alot of The Devil Next Door from him BUT far off.

So, as I've said 350 pages is their stories, how they end up meeting, the backstory of some characters, their depravity acts and such. Sex exists but is not graphic. Rape as well, not even the killing.. Yes there are some heads cut, some children killed but all said rarely showed.

So why my rating you may ask? The Ending is crappy.

So, I am going to have to spoil a bit so be warned (I will not dwell much afterwards)

- Well as I've said the vast majority of the tale is seeing the evil that man do (Iron Maiden reference) and how deprave we are. Some due to external factors, some born that way. When they go the same place they find some stairs and some monsters that start killing them off one by one until two are left alive and they just leave... So, I was thinking, well so much killers together you've got a battle royale but no. It's just monsters, some characters are just killed off screen, characters that we've been following since the start and it's just boring, badly done. I can't forgive and it feels lazy. YEs the characters shouldn't all die in a blaze of glory but killing 50% of them -" and that happen" it's just bad...

Book Review: Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

This book was my second foray into Brandon Sanderson stuff. The first was Emperor's Soul and it was awesome read. Now I tried this and after reading the first story I am going to read the all series. It's my second YA this year after Kathleen O'Neal One.

This tale we follow Spensa (Spin) as she is going through the pilot's school to be a fighter like her father who was labelled as a coward for fleeing a battle. So basically is a YA novel , hints of dystopia and sci-fi and the revelation in the end made me really interested to read more of it.

In terms of plot, it's simple one. Spin must overcome her difficulties being a pilot like her father whilst most people look down on her due to her father coward behaviour. We are talking about a nation, cities, that are highly militaristic - due to continuous attack of alien species called the Krell. They attack quite frequently and so society must produced teenagers to fight those battles. Usually the Krell don't use that many ships and Defiant (the place) usually defeats them. Of course, since the start you get the feeling something is not right... why the krell fill only 100 ships at most. Why do they target the best pilots first. Why do they not destroy the cities from above the sky since they have weapons more powerful than atomic bombs. All of these questions will be answered, or at least partially on this book.

One of the most interesting happens is also the M-Bot ship that appears and it's IA and takes Spin under it's wing. Their conversation are quite funny and although it can't really be human it sure tries, or else it will write a new routine for that purpose. It's the comic relief of the story, although Spin is also. If this was not Brandon Sanderson, probably it would be overused...

There are interesting characters like Jurgen, Ironside, Cobb, MF, the Sniper among others... He really tries to give them personality to all of them and they really feel like full grown characters as the story progress. After 500 pages he really flesh them out. They grow, they change, it's very good.

For all woke people out there, although there is a gal as a MC, Jurgen a first citizen - a noble - is black, ironsides which is high marshal is also black. But that's the interesting part, although we know the colour of their skin it really doesn't matter. He doesn't use the race or sex of a character to make part of the plot or character development. It's a good breath of fresh air.

Overall is a good first novel and start of series. Looking forward to read the next three.

Book Review: MALORIE by MALERMAN JOSH

It took me 2 days to read the novel, that's something. I've watch Birdie Box when it was released and then I've watch the other movie set in Barcelona. When I saw both books at sale I bought them. First I Want to learn more about the setting and I thought it brought something new. The second novel, this one was not Barcelona but a sequel of the first one which intrigue me. I thought the story was told...

I started and almost immediately I didn't enjoy it. So they were in a safe haven (somewhat) and chaos erupts and most are killed. Both Malorie and her two children escape and settle in another place. Time jump several years and now they are both 16. So knowing that she was a mother at teenager I bet she is around 30's.

Most of their life , and most of their book is about Malorie shielding the boy and girl (Tom & Olympia). After an encounter with someone who is making a census they learn that Malorie's parents may be alive so they travel to that place either on foot or by a newly built train.

Most of these book is bad to be honest, unless you forget about the first one and the apocalpytic world they are living. This book is quick guide on how not be a over protecting parent, realizing they will not be always x years and that with time if you control them too much the chains will be broken. Most of the novel is Malorie telling them not remove the blindfolds whilst Tom trying to escape her grip. Olympia just exists , sometimes siding with one or the other.

Now for the spoilers part... So, as you know there are these beings that make people crazy and committing crimes and then suicide , right? On Barcelona they delve more and making people that have seen this monsters to be completly ravening crazy but not to the point of suicide. Here we've got something else.. It seems you can look at them and not being crazy at all, even more revealing in the last 10 pages or so, Olympia (didn't really understand about Tom) could and see these monsters without any drawbacks whatsoever. So why did she let the monsters killed all the people on first haven and then on the following 10 years , why didn't she told anything? I know she is over protecting and such BUT...

So , as a post apocalyptic novel I would rate this bad. On a book that enhances my experience with Bird Box I would rate this bad. IF you just want a story focus on characters that are focus on being over protective to the limit due to her own fears then probably this is a book for you - but I am kidding. It's not that interesting. 33/100

Next week I am going to travel to Ireland. So I won't be doing a weekly update. I will do it probably on Sunday. So far I've read 4 novels and bought 4. I expect to finish Shadow of Ullanor. Malorie probably not. I am going to take with me Swan Song a big book to force myself - I have a problem reading books larger than 500 pages ahah.  I think I will buy several there on second hand stores but for now it's controlled. Everything else I bought before february so there's that.

This book is flag as Sci-Fi Horror. After finishing the novel I think the Tags my mislead you thinking this is a Alien-alike book but it's not. The Horror here is not visceral or monsters that will make you fear the night. No. The Horror is more psychological that anything else. There are a couple of situations that you feel horrible situation but not horror per se.

In this tale we follow Bartolomeu which follows the captain of a generation ship, giving him hints, advices and such. Bartolomeu is not a well like person, first because he has some handicapped problems (to be honest, they are mention from time to time but I didn't see anything that really made me think, well that's because he is handicapped or something like that. No it's handicapped but in the end is more "capped" that "regular" people. It was a bit strange and a missed opportunity. We also have other interesting characters like the Bishop , the Captain, Par - the dwarf and Father Veronica. Yes a woman, not trans or something like. They just call the clergy woman as Father (don't know if it's normal in protestant religion but I will check later).

So, this tale , we follow a generation ship that has been traveling through space for hundreds of years, so much that nobody knows how long. There was a revolution two hundreds years before and much history was destroyed. In this "day" of age, the ship is divided in the higher deck and lower decks. The lower decks work on maintaining the ship while the higher are just "nobles" and lead the ship and important stuff. We also have a religion, Christian religion and the Bishop and the Captain are always frightening to get the higher hand. To be honest the first 150 pages is basically politics and getting to know the characters and don't get me wrong, probably my favourite part. The second part of the tale is their investigation of a strange ship that appear form nowhere. And here lays some of the horror stuff they talk about it and there is BUT not that much. Some are just hinted...

So what's good about this? Well, in terms of characters I really love it. I love reading about our main protagonist and his ways within the echelons that hate him and his interest on the lower decks and also his love for Father Veronica. The investigations on the ship is also interesting and the last 50/60 pages just fly by. To be honest I was a bit sad about one character but alas, not going to tell you about it.

What's also good? Well the philosophy and theologian debates that we have between almost all characters... One of the best is chapter 40 where Father Veronica & Bartolomeo talk about god and the debate of free will and\or maybe not. One of the most interesting was the Christ Crucification explanation where Father explains the "official" view and her view - god's own guilt.

"He create us. He gave us Free Will. Therefore He is in some real way ultimately responsible for the suffering we inflict upon one another. He Has His own Guilt. And sacrificing His Son, Himself, was a way to help expiate that guilt."

So that's it.. It's an interesting tale about discover, about theology where the main character is atheist and in love with the most pious of women. It's much more. If you enjoy books that deal with Generation Ships then this book is for you. You love books that deal with discover of a truly alien species and not humans in other shapes then this book is for you.

Thunderhead follows the previous, couple of months later (almost a year). Here we follow Anastasia the vast majority of the time (almost always accompanied with Granddame Curie, also a bit of Rowan as he is killing scythes that are a shame for the ideals they (old guard) represent. If anyone likes gleaming, is discriminatory etc - will get gleam by Scythe Lucifer. We also follow a bit of Faraday (which at the time is hidden and looking for the Land of Nod) and he is being helped by a Scythe wannabe / librarian Munira (although these instances are far in-between the great scheme and finally we have a new character, Greyson Tolliver who is enamoured with thunderhead even wanting to work for her but following what he thought it was her advise he breaks one of the vows of contacting the Scythes and his expelled.

But the main character and probably the most interesting , flesh out one is not those above. OH no, she is every chapter (and there are more than 40) and we get to see, finally, what is the ThunderHead. This tale we get to know her more and more and even more, we see her change as the story progress. It was an amazing feet to make it happen and I really love it. She (is a it maybe?) a lot throughout the book , although a lot of it was a bit predictable. Read and understand why.

The ending was very good and I can't understand the feeling of people waiting a year for the end. Thank the lords I Am late to the party. Not in February but in March I am going to read it. 83/100.

If you enjoy the first you are going to enjoy the second - although and there is a caveat, the last two were highly focus on those two teens and their pseudo-love story. Here both characters are there but the most important thing is ThunderHead and the going forward with all the plotlines... If you were invested on those two characters, well I Don't' know book 3 but I expect some closure there. The main story, again is the politics within the scythes. Old Guards vs Goddard and the correct way of gleaming, the all scythes society vs thunderhead and finally the city and procedures. Again, highly focus on advancing the plotlines, less on characters
